The Fisk Jubilee Singers  The Fisk Jubilee Singers   (Purchase Tickets)
November 16, 2010 – 7:30 p.m.
The original Jubilee Singers introduced “slave songs” to the world in 1871 when they went on tour to raise funds for their financially strapped university. They were instrumental in preserving the American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals.

The group broke racial barriers in the U.S. and abroad in the late 19th century, entertained kings and queens in Europe – and in the process, saved their school. In 1999, the Fisk Jubilee Singers were featured in “Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory” a PBS award-winning television documentary series, produced by WGBH/Boston. In 2008, the singers received the 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest honor for artists and patrons of the arts.
