As this year’s 3D Journeys travelers prepare to leave Saturday for their adventures in Morocco, organizers are already planning next year’s travel-and-learn series.
“2020 is going to be the 10th anniversary of 3D Journeys,” said First Lady Celeste Myall, who will be hosting the international trip with her husband, President Dan McAlexander. “We wanted something special to mark the occasion, so not only will we have a fantastic travel destination, but we will be adding another day trip to the schedule.”
The theme for 2020 lectures and international travel is “Alps to Lagoon: Culture and Cuisine from Lucerne to Venice.” The spring lecture series will focus on the food and traditions of Switzerland and northern Italy.
“We really worked to come up with something special for this 10th 3D trip,” said Myall. “Steve Hart of Hart Travel Partners has arranged our last six trips, so he knows our travelers and their interests.”
Hart called the itinerary “a sensational journey of experiences of food, music and culture.”
The trip will include a blend of the majesty of the Swiss Alps to charming Italian towns and the unique city of Venice.
Highlights will include a fondue dinner in Lucerne, a boat trip to Bellagio featuring finger foods and local drinks, a food walking tour of Milan, a cooking lesson, a visit to the Pollenzo Slow Food University and wine library, an opera performance and a gondola ride in Venice.
More information and topics for the spring lecture series will be available at the Sept. 23 event. Topics of the spring series also will be announced.
Keeping it closer to home, the first day trip will be Oct. 28 when travelers will visit Montgomery, Alabama, to tour the Legacy Museum’s “From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration” and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, a national memorial to commemorate the victims of lynching in the United States. Registration is now underway.
The second day trip is on March 16 and will take visitors to Pasaquan near Buena Vista. The colorful art environment was created by Eddie Owens Martin, also known as St. EOM. He created 7 acres filled with six major structures, more than 900 feet of painted masonry fence, painted totems, decorative walkways, sculptures, paintings and other art and artifacts.
The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. The trip will include lunch at the Chattahoochee River Club. More information will be available Jan. 27.
Nancy Durand ’68,H’18 has served on the 3D committee since its beginning.
“I’ve watched it grow and develop into an integral part of the college’s efforts to serve LaGrange and the surrounding areas,” she said. “Not only does 3D Journeys offer people the opportunity to learn about our world through the lectures and travel, but also to learn about the college, see its beautiful campus and to become a lifelong friend of LaGrange College.”
Durand and her husband, Dan, have been on all but one of the trips.
“All of them have been wonderful, giving us a chance to explore new places,” she said. “But more importantly, we have had the pleasure to become friends with other travelers.”

Dr. Celia Hay, Professor and Chair of the Nursing Department, was recognized at a retirement reception Tuesday. President Dan McAlexander noted that Dr. Hay had touched the lives of more than 500 nurses during her 23 years at the college.
LaGrange College has baseball, golf, men’s tennis and women’s tennis teams competing in their respective tournaments in the USA South Spring Sports Festival that continues through Sunday. This marks the third year the City of LaGrange along with the Troup County Parks and Recreation has hosted the annual event. Conference championships will be decided in baseball, softball, golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s tennis.
Today is Honors Day. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Callaway Auditorium. Outstanding departmental scholars will be honored, teaching awards will be presented and the Waights G. Henry Jr. Leadership Award winner will be announced. A full list of awards will be included in next week’s issue of @lagrange.
The Senior Art Exhibition opens today with a reception at 7 p.m. at Lamar Dodd Art Center. The exhibition will be up through May 18.
The Undergraduate Research Poster Session will be 1:30-3 p.m. today (Friday) in Dickson Assembly Room, featuring presentations given at the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research in Kennesaw earlier this month.
“A Story to Tell,” the spring Musical Theatre showcase, will be this weekend at Price Theater. Conceived and directed by Tim Fitz-Gerald, the show will feature selections from “Show Boat,” “West Side Story,” “Company,” “Next to Normal,” “Hamilton” and many more. Admission is free. Showtimes are 8 p.m. today (Friday), 7 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Political Science majors Peter Alford, Robert Allen, Agrlin Braxton, Seth Golden and Stephen Wagner joined Political Science Professor Dr. John Tures in publishing a study linking hate crime laws to lower crime rates. The research was published in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.

Baseball
The Panthers (27-9) defeated Greensboro 9-7 in the USA South Tournament on Thursday. Austin McDade hit a two-run home run, while Cael Chatham and McKinley Erves had three hits each. LC will play Methodist at 10 a.m. today (Friday) at Cleaveland Field.
Golf
The Panthers are third after the first round of the USA South Tournament at Highland Country Club. LC was led by sophomore Sam Rogers, who had a 2-under par 70 and is tied for eighth in the individual standings. The tournament continues through Saturday.
Tennis
The LaGrange tennis teams open play in their respective USA South Tournaments at McCluskey Tennis Center today (Friday). The men face Averett at 10 a.m. and the women take on N.C. Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
