Dr. Samuel Miller has been named Assistant Professor of Music and Choral Director, according to Dr. Toni Anderson, Coordinator of the Music Program. He will be teaching music education courses and choral ensembles, beginning Aug. 1.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Miller to our artistic team,” said Dr. Anderson. “We believe he will bring strong leadership to the LaGrange College singers as well as be an excellent mentor for our music education majors.”
A native of Brunswick, Georgia, Dr. Miller holds a doctorate from the University of Kentucky in choral conducting, a master’s in music and choral conducting from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, a master’s in music education from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s in music education from Valdosta State University, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Dr. Mitch Turner, Professor of Music, served as chairman of the search committee.
“Dr. Miller is a highly accomplished choral conductor and respected music educator, whose choirs have earned impressive distinctions at competitions across Georgia,” said Dr. Turner. “As an officer and active member of Georgia Music Educators Association for the past seven years, his close connections with music teachers throughout the state will help us continue to grow and establish our music education program.”
Dr. Miller is currently the choral director at Woodland High School in Stockbridge, Georgia, where he also serves as fine arts department chair and literary coordinator. He was named the 2014-2015 Woodland High Teacher of the Year, and is an active member of GMEA, where he has served as the chairman and treasurer for District VI.
He said he is eager to begin his new position at LaGrange.
“I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to build on an excellent foundation,” he said. “I’m excited about working with wonderful students and colleagues, and getting to make some really great music.”
While at Kentucky, he was co-director of the UK Choristers, assistant director of the UK Men’s Chorus, taught private conducting lessons to graduate students, assisted with the undergraduate music education majors and assisted the director of choral activities as requested.
Dr. Miller has performed with and directed choirs in Georgia; Florida; Washington, D.C.; New York; Chicago; Hungary; Italy; and France.
Along with school choirs, he has served as the director of music for the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Macon, associate director for the Choral Society of Middle Georgia in Macon, and as a choral assistant for the Lexington Singers in Lexington.
He lives in Stockbridge with his wife, Jennifer, and children, Nathan, 6, and Edie, 2.
