Think Deeply. Argue Well. Go Further.

History at LaGrange is more than dates and timelines — it's where you learn to think critically, research deeply, and make a compelling argument. Through small seminar-style classes, close faculty mentorship, and hands-on experiences beyond the classroom, you'll develop the analytical and communication skills that prepare you for law, education, government, business, and beyond.

Build Skills That Transfer Anywhere

History isn't just about the past — it's one of the best preparations for wherever you want to go. At LaGrange, you'll write, research, argue, and present at a level that sets you apart in any field.

Coursework develops skills in:

  • Historical research and archival methods
  • Critical analysis and argumentation
  • Written and oral communication
  • Thesis research and defense
  • Applied history through internships and supervised projects

Every History major completes a senior thesis — a capstone research project presented and defended before the college community.

National History Day Mentoring Program History majors mentor K–12 students through the National History Day program, gaining hands-on teaching experience and giving back to the broader community — a rare opportunity that connects service and professional development.

Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society LaGrange's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta — the national history honor society — is one of the most active academic organizations on campus. Members attend field trips, present research at regional and national conferences, and engage with the broader historical community.

Undergraduate Research Recognition For three consecutive years (2023–2025), LaGrange History majors have presented at the annual meeting of the Georgia Association of Historians and won the college's John R. Hines Undergraduate Research Award.
